SERPENT 2023

The rug portrays the mystical serpent, a powerful symbol of the divine feminine’s universal earth energy. Across local Bulgarian folklore and worldwide beliefs, the snake has been a crucial figure with profound mythological importance. In ancient times, people often linked snakes with healing. As an embodiment of chaos, fertility, and wisdom, the snake represents both fire and water, earthly and divine, as well as death and rebirth.

This is the first work, part of an ongoing project called ‘Poetry Will Save Your Soul’. The title of this project is inspired by an anonymous graffiti found on a street in Sofia. The author’s idea is to collaborate with local and international poets, writers, playwrights, and musicians to create joint works in the form of textile panels and carpets.

In collaboration with poet and writer Stefan Ivanov, the “With You” project features textile works with text, creating a space for reevaluating the necessity of fundamental communication. The artworks are accompanied by a poetic research essay and were exhibited at the inaugural edition of the Center for Social Vision – NEGOTIATION, in the Swimming Pool Gallery in Sofia.

In the message rug series, Rosie uses trite phrases and mantras that anyone can understand. The carpets seem to communicate with intense clarity, yet the juxtaposition of the phrases produces paradoxes and confusions that do not allow for easy interpretation. By provoking questions about authorship, provenance and ultimate meaning, the rugs invite viewers to question their beliefs and values.
